Home > Places to Visit on the Isle of Wight > Butterfly & Fountain World
Butterfly World consists not only of a colourful butterfly house with free flying butterflies but also many other attractions.
Butterfly House - Our butterflies are tropical and have to be kept in conditions close to their natural environment. During the season there will be over 35 colourful species to be found. It is possible to see the full life cycle and, if you are fortunate, witness the emergence of a butterfly from its cocoon. We also have the largest moth in the world with a wing span of 27cm. As they only live 6 - 10 days it is not always on show.
Japanese Garden - This is recreated to reflect the Japanese love of Koi carp. We have two large ponds, the larger housing our very large fish which are hand fed three times a day.
Italian Garden - This garden is built on formal lines with an Italian temple facade. A large pond houses Golden Orfe and goldfish. There are different water features with synchronised fountains and gardens which are a riot of colour in the summer.
Small World - A creation for children. It features an animated clown jazz band and also pirate and snow scenes with animated figures.
Jumping Jets - As you walk over the up-jets mind you don’t get wet as your attention is taken by the computer controlled jumping plumes of water arcing from one area to another. As you pass through the overhead water arch you will make you way out to the extensive shop.
Gift Shop - The shop is brimful of gifts. There’s a large range of jewellery and gifts with a butterfly motif. Toys, candles, ornaments, jigsaws, linen ware, biscuits and sweets and many more ideas.
Coffee Shop - Adjacent to the Butterfly House is the Hungry Caterpillar coffee shop. We serve various beverages, light snacks, soup and cakes together with children's lunch boxes.
Garden Centre - Medina Garden Centre is on the same complex. It is one of the oldest garden centres on the island and boasts a renowned water gardening section. The centre supplies gardening requirements plus furniture and a large gift range.
