St James Square, Newport Isle of Wight

The beautiful and historic town of Newport is situated in the centre of the Isle of Wight and is its principal town centred on two elegant squares with fine Georgian and Victorian town houses.

The impressive colonnaded Guildhall was designed by John Nash and built in 1816, with clock tower added in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. It now houses the Museum of Island History and the Tourist Information Centre. To unearth even more Island history, spend some time at Carisbrooke Castle situated on the outskirts of the town.

Newport is a good place for shopping, with well-known outlets, exclusive shops, and the Quay Arts Centre, where you can browse the work of local artists. With a cinema, three theatres, pubs, restaurants and nightclubs, there's plenty of evening entertainment.

Newport Harbour, a short walk from the town centre has facilities for visiting yachtsmen. Walking and cycling by the River Medina is delightful.
