The Isle of Wight has been named as among the Top 25 UK Destinations by TripAdvisor in its 2010 Travellers' Choice Destination Awards chosen by Europeans. Out of 25 winners in the category, the Island was positioned at number 14 in the UK (8th in England), exceeding top-notch holiday destinations like the Yorkshire Dales and Padstow in Cornwall.
With over 30 million trusted traveller opinions and reviews, TripAdvisor is one of the key sources for travel tips on hotels, resorts and destinations. The largest competition of its kind, the Travellers' Choice Award is a heavyweight as it is based on millions of unbiased reviews.
As a European favourite, the Island is cited as 'the perfect place to enjoy some peace, quiet and natural beauty'. Osborne House, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and Ventnor Botanic Gardens have been singled out as 'don't miss' attractions, while the 1970 pop festival featuring Jimi Hendrix and The Who is referred to as 'Britain's Woodstock'.
While overseas visitors are not as numerous as those from the domestic sector, the Island has seen a steady increase over the past four years.
Cllr George Brown, Isle of Wight Council Cabinet Member for the economy, tourism, leisure and planning said: “It is very encouraging to be singled out as one of the UK's best destinations by foreign tourists in this way and the message that the Island offers a top quality holiday experience at extraordinary value is obviously getting through.
“The growth of the internet now makes overseas marketing much easier and cheaper and with the future expansion of Southampton Airport providing even quicker access to key European markets, the council will continue to be pro-active in promoting and servicing the needs of overseas visitors.
