WALK TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT: THE ISLE OF WIGHT SPEED-DATING WALK 2010

Looking for a partner to share your love of walking...and perhaps even your life? If so, hot-foot down to the Isle of Wight where this May, you can walk to your hearts content.
Now in its 5th year, the Isle of Wight speed-dating walk on Sunday 9 May forms part of the council’s annual walking festival (8-23 May) which every year attracts around 12,000 visitors from all areas of the UK and overseas.
Great as part of a weekend break, the speed-dating walk is fun and has a track record of bringing people together. Maybe it’s the Island’s stunning scenery, the warm sea air or the arrival of spring - a time of love and romance - but so far at least 3 couples have tied the knot as a result of meeting on the walk, while dozens more have formed lasting friendships.
However, if the thought of a speed-dating walk doesn’t appeal, then there are lots more opportunities to walk off into the sunset with like-minded people. The two-week Isle of Wight Walking Festival boasts 250 walks and there are 500 miles of footpaths to explore, many located in areas of outstanding natural beauty.
Whatever your passion from manor houses and medieval villages to butterflies and bluebells, the Isle of Wight Walking Festival is a rare opportunity to learn more about local landmarks and discover hidden gems along forgotten byways. Walks are led by local enthusiasts who are able to share their knowledge of this beautiful island with you – and most are free!
The Isle of Wight speed-dating walk starts at 11am on Sunday 9 May at the Fisherman’s Cottage, which is located on the beach at the foot of Shanklin Chine. The walk lasts 3 hours (distance 4 miles) and costs £5 to register, or £12 if you require a light lunch at the pub afterwards. Suitable for those aged 18 and over, booking is essential and registration forms are available on the website, www.isleofwightwalkingfestival.co.uk.
The Isle of Wight Walking Festival is organised by the Isle of Wight Council as part of its commitment to supporting the Island's tourism industry especially through events that encourage healthy activities and showcase the natural beauty the Island has to offer. Since it began in 1999, this two-week event has become a major part of the Island’s festival calendar and has put the Island on the map as a serious walking destination.
