The shortest route to the Island is by hovercraft from Southsea to Ryde (www.hovertravel.co.uk) and takes just 10 minutes. Wightlink's Portsmouth to Ryde FastCat (www.wightlink.co.uk) takes 18 minutes and there are direct mainline train connections from London Waterloo, Brighton, Bristol and Southampton to Portsmouth and onward Island Line services to Brading, Sandown and Shanklin from Ryde Pier Head. The Red Jet Hi-speed (www.redfunnel.co.uk)service takes 23 minutes and Family Day Return tickets for parties of 3 or 4 are available for travel after 0915 throughout the week. Both Wightlink and Red Funnel are part of the National rail network which means that you can buy a combined rail/ferry ticket from any train station.
Once here it's easy to get around with Island buses which service all the major towns and villages. At just £20 for a family of five, the Rover ticket offers great value and freedom to roam (www.islandbuses.info) - try the open-top bus tour along the south-west coastline for spectacular scenery.

The Real Ale Festival

Isle of Wight Randonnee

Get your legs out on this clockwise cycle ride around the Island, but only if you're fit enough. At 100km (or 55km for the mini-randonnee) it's not for the faint-hearted! Start at any of the checkpoints around the Island - visit the website for full details.

WILDZONE - Bug Hunt

Use the Discovery Packs provided to investigate bugs and other wildlife lurking on the Duver, a wide stretch of grass and sand dunes. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

There is a year-round programme of National Trust events on the Island. From 4-26 May, visitors can see a small display of finished work from the Isle of Wight Woodturners at Newtown Old Town Hall, Newport, PO30 4PA. This fascinating 17th century town hall is located in a tranquil village of the same name on the edge of a marshland nature reserve. Cost £2 adult, £1 child, family £5 - booking not necessary.
