Wight Words

A brand new festival celebrating writers and writing of all kinds - Wight Words - takes place on the Island from 24 September until 15 October. Organisers have put together a wide range of events, from hip hop poetry to literary quizzes, an open mic event at the Island's Quay Arts to a Lewis Carroll conference and song writing workshops.

The Isle of Wight has a deep and rich tradition when it comes to writing. Tennyson, Dickens, Swinburne, Keats, WH Auden, Virginia Woolf and many others have all come here for adventure, retreat or recreation. Today's budding authors can find inspiration by following in Tennyson's famous footsteps at Freshwater Bay.

Wight Words pulls together the many professional authors currently living and working on the Island providing something for all tastes and audiences. Events take place at venues across the Island, including Quay Arts in Newport and Dimbola Lodge at Freshwater Bay. There is a small charge for most events while some are free. In addition, poetry boxes will be installed around the Island, including ferry terminals, giving visitors the chance to wax lyrical about the Island or whatever else comes to mind.

A programme of events is available from Island tourist information centres, or by visiting www.wightwords.co.uk
